%X Resumo O Brasil, com a extensao territorial de 8,5 milhoes de quilometros quadrados, recursos economicos limitados e distribuicao populacional ainda desigual e concentrada, apresenta dificuldades operacionais ao conhecimento e avaliacao dos seus recursos naturais. Diante dessa problematica, o Governo Federal decidiu iniciar, na decada de sessenta, o desenvolvimento de pesquisas voltadas para a area espacial, tendo como um dos objetivos a utilizacao de dados orbitais para a execucao de levantamento dos recursos naturais. O Instituto de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE)e o principal responsavel na area civil pelo desenvolvimento destas pesquisas, atraves do seu Departamento de Pesquisa e Aplicacoes (DPA)da area de Sensoriamento Remoto. Este trabalho apresenta os estudos realizados pelo Programa de Vegetacao/Floresta do DPA, que tem como linha de atuacao o estudo da cobertura vegetal atraves das tecnicas de Sensoriamento Remoto incluindo a sua caracterizacao e/ou mapeamento, a sua avaliacao e/ou inventario,, e o seu manejo e/ou monitoramento, em ambientes naturais, em areas de povoamentos florestais plantados, ou em areas de preservacao ecologica. Abstract Brasil, with a territorial extension of 8.5 ,nillions square kilometers, scarce econornic resources and an unequal and concentra-ted populational distribution, presents operational diffculties to the knowledge and evaluation of its natural resources. Ana lysing ti-ris problem, the Federal Governinent decided to start, in the sixty decade, the deve loprnent of researches related to the spatial area, having as one of its objectives the utilization of orbital data to the execution of the natural resources survey. The Institute for Space Research (INPE) is the niain civilian organ responsible for the deve lopment of these researches through its Research and Applications Department (DPA) in the Rernote Sensing area. This work presents the studies realized by the Vegetation and Forest Progrccn of the DPA, that has as its maín purpose the study of the vegetal cover using the rernote sensina techniques, including its characterization and/or rnapping, its evaluation and/or inventory, and its managrnent and/or monitoring, in natural environinents, in forest plantation areas, or in ecological conservation arcas.
