ABSTRACT: The Tapajós National Forest (FNT) has been observed by several remote sensor types, for many years. As one of the main study sites of the Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA) project, the FNT has been object of several remote sensing campaigns. However, the papers that have tried to integrate the information originating from the multiple sensors and to advance in the vegetation cover mapping, going beyond the mapping carried out by RADAMBRASIL project in the seventies, are still scarce. Besides the remote sensing data, important sources of information to study vegetation of FNT are the forest inventories (IFs) of large sampling intensity, carried out in the seventies and eighties by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), respectively. These IFs sampled 231 ha of forest and more than 55,000 trees in the FNT. The main objective of this dissertation is to produce a map of vegetation cover distribution of the FNT region, utilizing data from multiple source of remote sensing with the support of spatial modeling of IFs rich data base. To do so, multitemporal remote sensing images (1988, 1997, 1999 TM and 2001 ETM+ images; a 2002 RADARSAT mosaic; one image of hyperspectral Hyperion sensor; and aerial videography acquired in 1999 and 2000 missions), old and recent IFs data, as well as ancillary information about elevation and precipitation. The floristic and phytosociologic composition of the forest were determined from recent IFs data. For the old IFs data, two analyses were applied: (1) determination of pattern distribution of the main tree species using the events pattern analysis (kernel analysis) technique; (2) spatial distribution of the structural vegetation data such as the basal area (AB), aerial biomass (BA), and commercial volume of wood (VCM) per hectare, using geostatistics technique (krigging). For the remote sensing data, the following procedures were performed: (1) validation of the atmospheric correction of 2001 ETM+/Landsat image using the hyperspectral Hyperion image; (2) mapping the vegetation cover classes of the FNT utilizing a multitemporal data analysis developed especially for mapping the secondary succession areas; (3) mapping the primary forest classes of the FLONA through the RADARSAT mosaic; and (4) validation of the classification using ground truth data (recent IFs, field ground control points, and aerial videography). From these processing the following results were achieved: (1) determination of three floristic and structural profiles of the FNT; (2) spatial determination of the areas with higher occurrence of dominant tree species; (3) spatial distribution of the biophysical (AB, BA, and VCM) data of the forest; and (4) thematic map of vegetation cover carried out by using multitemporal data from multisensors. The analysis of the RADARSAT mosaic showed a good correspondence of its features with the RADAMBRASIL vegetation classes. Therefore, the generated map contributed to update the cartographic contours of the RADAMBRASIL vegetation map. However, comparing these mapped vegetation classes with biophysical information derived from spatial modeling approach, it became clear that there is not a correspondence between contours of the RADAMBRASIL and spatial modeling approach. Although this comparison suggests that, in terms of biophysical structure information, the number of vegetation classes could be reduced, more work needs to be done. The methodology developed for mapping the secondary succession areas using a semiautomatic approach is a promising alternative for analyzing these areas in the Amazon region.
