AbstractStudies of atmospheric diffusion based on plume shapes have been reported ever since the work by Richardson in 19211 and Roberts in 1923,2 the latter having also presented his "opacity theory." Subsequent studies have included wind tunnel experiments, ground, airplane, and satellite pictures. Photogrammetric techniques to obtain and process plume data are relatively simple.3"10 Such techniques can be effective, as in the case of smoke plumes in which particulate concentrations measured by an airborne nephelometer were only 10% different (on the average) from those obtained using photogrammetric techniques.9 Theoretical analysis of plumes depicted in such photos varies considerably; see Ref. 10 for an extensive list of works in this field. Ultraviolet photos of SO2 plumes have been suggested11 and a recent application is found in Ref. 12. However, the equipment and techniques required for ultraviolet photography are more complicated than the common SLR camera with colorinfrared film (CIR) and a Wratten #12 filter used in this study.
