AbstractÉ pesquisado o uso de imagens produzidas pelo imageador multiespectral (MSS) do primeiro SATÉLITE DE TECNOLOGIA DOS RECURSOS DA TERRA (ERTS-1) ao mapeamento geológico da Região do Alto e Médio São Francisco. Na análise das imagens foram usadas técnicas convencionais de foto-interpretação com análise de padrão de drenagem, feições do relevo, tons de cinza, feições geomórficas características, vegetação e uso da terra. A análise dos elementos, associada à continuidade geomórfica, originou as unidades de interpretação, posteriormente correlacionadas com unidades estratigráficas de mapeamento convencional de superfície. As imagens provaram ser uma ferramenta efetiva no mapeamento geológico de reconhecimento. ABSTRACT: This is an experiment to use the imagery produced by the MultiSpectral Scanner subsystem (MSS) of the first Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-l) in the geological mapping of the region of the head-waters and middle course of the São Francisco river. The ERTS imagery was evaluated by conventional techniques of photogeological interpretation, analysing drainage patterns, landfonns, tonality, characteristic features, vegetation and land use. From the analysis of such elements and the geomorphic continuity, a series of interpretative mapping units could be differentiated, and structural features could be identified. ERTS'MSS imagery is proving to be an effective remote sensing tool for regional geologic reconnaissance in Brazil.
