ABSTRACT: The objective of this work was to develop a soybean crop production estimation system and test it in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, using geotechnologies. The study area comprises 322 municipalities which are responsible for nearly 90% of the State soybean production. Crop area estimation was performed for the crop years 2000/01 and 2001/02 by using six Landsat scenes acquired at two different periods per scene, in each crop year. In 2000/01, the estimate was carried out by both automatic and visual image classification at municipal and State level. In 2001/02, the crop area was estimated only at State level using a sample based on segments of size 1 x 1 km square method. An agrometeorological-spectral model (MAE) integrated into a Geographic Information System was used to estimate grain yield for crop years 2000/01 to 2002/03. The spectral variable for this model was the leaf area index (LAI) estimated from the NDVI values derived from MODIS images. LAI values were also estimated from literature data in order to replace MODIS images. In this case the model was named agrometeorological model (MA). The soybean production was estimated by multiplying the crop area times the soybean yield estimated from the MAE. The results were compared with the official statistics provided by the Systematic Survey Agricultural Production (LSPA). For the crop area estimate in 2000/01, the largest relative differences were observed in municipalities with very low soybean crop area, although the highest absolute differences were observed in municipalities with high soybean crop area (above 10.000 ha). The overall result showed an overestimation of planted area around 11,3% between LSPA and Landsat. In 2001/02, the sample square method showed a planted area increment of 11.97% in relation to 2000/01, which was higher than the LSPA estimation (8.76%). Due to these differences the official grain yield data was adjusted based on production data and crop area estimated from Landsat in order to compare the ?corrected? LSPA yield data with the MAE and MA yield output, whereas the official increment was used to adjust the crop year of 2002/03. Eventually, no significant differences were found between LSPA and MAE or MA for the crop years of 2000/01 and 2001/02 for [alpha] = 5% (t=0,03 for MAE and MA in 2000/01 and t=0,20 for MAE and 1,81 for MA in 2001/02). For the crop year of 2002/03, both models underestimated grain yield when compared with LSPA by 204 (t=6,48) and 228 kg ha-1 (t= 7,3) for MAE and MA, respectively. Moreover, the MAE proved to be a powerful tool to estimate yield variation at both municipal and state level, as well as to monitor soybean crop throughout the growing season. Besides, the proposed system can be used to aid the traditional and subjective soybean crop production method in Rio Grande do Sul State.
