             abstract = "Campos m{\'e}dios e de desvio padr{\~a}o mensais do vento {\`a} 
                         superf{\'{\i}}cie do Oceano Atl{\^a}ntico, setor 20 N {\`a} 
                         40 S foram gerados a partir dos dados do escater{\^o}metro do 
                         ERS 1/2. Os dados foram obtidos junto ao IFREMER para o 
                         per{\'{\i}}odo de dezembro de 1991 a novembro de 1998. Este 
                         trabalho avaliou a variabilidade temporal e espacial do campo de 
                         vento para esta regi{\~a}o. Os dados originais 
                         (dire{\c{c}}{\~a}o e velocidade do vento) foram primeiro 
                         convertidos para componentes zonal e meridional. Bloco de dados do 
                         escater{\^o}metro correspondentes a tr{\^e}s dias foram usados 
                         para a interpola{\c{c}}{\~a}o em uma grade geogr{\'a}fica 
                         regular de 1 x 1. Uma interpola{\c{c}}{\~a}o espacial simples, 
                         envolvendo um processo iterativo com corre{\c{c}}{\~a}o de 
                         valores m{\'e}dios de erros ponderados foi utilizada. Uma 
                         avalia{\c{c}}{\~a}o deste algoritmo foi feita comparando o 
                         resultado com ventos medidos pelas boias do projeto PIRATA e os 
                         dados de ventos de rean{\'a}lises do NCEP. As diferen{\c{c}}as 
                         RMS da intensidade do vento da b{\'o}ia - escater{\^o}metro 
                         (P-S) e boia - NCEP (P-N) foram: 0;35W (P-S=1.13 m/s; P-N=1.11 
                         m/s); 10S;10W (P-S=0.72 m/s; PN= 1.83 m/s) e 15N;38W (P-S=0.99 
                         m/s). Os resultados dos campos de vento descrevem as principais 
                         fei{\c{c}}{\~o}es dos ventos al{\'{\i}}sios de Sudeste e 
                         Nordeste. A ITCZ e o centro de alta press{\~a}o semi-permanente 
                         nos sub-tr{\'o}picos s{\~a}o claramente detectados nos campos 
                         m{\'e}dios. Uma migra{\c{c}}{\~a}o meridional e sazonal do 
                         centro de diverg{\^e}ncia dos ventos na regi{\~a}o da 
                         bifurca{\c{c}}{\~a}o da Corrente Sul Equatorial foi observada 
                         nos dados, com poss{\'{\i}}vel implica{\c{c}}{\~a}o no 
                         deslocamento da regi{\~a}o de forma{\c{c}}{\~a}o da Corrente do 
                         Brasil ao longo do ano. O harm{\^o}nico anual {\'e} o sinal mais 
                         forte presente nos dados de vento nos tr{\'o}picos; as 
                         regi{\~o}es com altos harm{\^o}nicos anuais est{\~a}o 
                         associadas com a m{\'a}xima migra{\c{c}}{\~a}o meridional da 
                         ITCZ. ABSTRACT: Monthly mean and standard deviation values of 
                         surface winds of the Atlantic Ocean sector from 20 N to 40 S 
                         were generated from the ERS 1/2 scatterometer data. The data was 
                         obtained from IFREMER and covers the period from December 1991 to 
                         November 1998. The objective of this effort was the analysis of 
                         the spatial and temporal variability of the wind field for the 
                         region. The original data (wind direction and speed) were first 
                         converted into zonal and meridional components. Three day blocks 
                         of scatterometer data were used for the interpolation into a 
                         regular 1 x 1 geographic grid. A simple spatial interpolation 
                         that uses an iteration procedure with a correction of mean value 
                         of weighted errors was implemented. An evaluation of this 
                         algorithm was done comparing the interpolated results with winds 
                         measured by the buoys of the PIRATA project array and the wind 
                         data from the NCEP reanalysis. The rms differences of 
                         buoyscatterometer (P-S) and buoy-NCEP (P-N) wind magnitudes for 
                         1998 were: 0;35W (PS= 1.13 ms-1; P-N=1.11 ms-1); 10S;10W (P-S=0.72 
                         ms-1; P-N=1.83 ms-1) and 15N;38W (P-S=0.99 ms-1). The resulting 
                         wind fields describe the main features of Southeast and Northeast 
                         trades, with the ITCZ and semi-permanent high pressure system in 
                         the subtropics clearly detected. A meridional and seasonal 
                         migration of the center of the wind divergence in the South 
                         Equatorial Current region was observed in the scatterometer data. 
                         This could imply in a seasonal migration of the Brazil Current 
                         formation region. The annual harmonic is the strongest signal 
                         present in the wind data in the tropics; the regions with highest 
                         annual harmonic are associated with the maximum seasonal 
                         meridional migration of the ITCZ.",
