                         sistemas costeiros. Apesar disso, s{\~a}o pouco conhecidos e 
                         muito devastados, necessitando, portanto, de pesquisas que 
                         permitam a sua identifica{\c{c}}{\~a}o de maneira r{\'a}pida e 
                         pouco onerosa. As t{\'e}cnicas de sensoriamento remoto que 
                         utilizam dados obtidos por sat{\'e}lite, processados 
                         digitalmente, tem sido muito valiosas, n{\~a}o s{\'o} por seu 
                         reduzido custo, como tamb{\'e}m pela capacidade de fornecer uma 
                         vis{\~a}o geral da extensa {\'a}rea costeira. Esta pesquisa teve 
                         como objetivo avaliar a distribui{\c{c}}{\~a}o f{\'{\i}}sica 
                         dos manguezais da regi{\~a}o Cananeia-Iguape atrav{\'e}s de 
                         processamento digital de imagens MSS-LANDSAT com imagens de radar 
                         e fotografias a{\'e}reas. A classifica{\c{c}}{\~a}o 
                         estat{\'{\i}}stica realizada por algoritmos do Sistema 
                         Interativo de Analise de Imagens Multiespectrais (IMAGE-100) 
                         forneceu um mapa tem{\'a}tico com 13 unidades de manguezal. Estas 
                         {\'a}reas foram calculadas e correlacionadas com as {\'a}reas 
                         obtidas em fotografias a{\'e}reas panor{\^a}micas e em imagens 
                         de radar. Os resultados encontrados revelaram coeficientes de 
                         correla{\c{c}}{\~a}o linear muito pr{\'o}ximos de um (r=0,99), 
                         o qual demonstrou que o processamento de dados MSS-LANDSAT e 
                         satisfat{\'o}rio para a identifica{\c{c}}{\~a}o das 
                         caracter{\'{\i}}sticas gerais dos ambientes de manguezais. 
                         ABSTRACT: Mangroves are considered to be responsible for the high 
                         biological productivity of coastal enviroments. In spite of their 
                         ecological importance, their spatial distribution patterns are 
                         poorly known and this fact restricts the effectiveness of 
                         management regarding protective measures against devastation by 
                         man. The application of satellite remote sensing techniques to the 
                         study of these patterns is economically attractive and permits an 
                         overall view of extensive areas. This study was made to evaluate 
                         the physical distribution of the Canan{\'e}ia-Iguape mangrove in 
                         the southeast Brazilian coast using MSS-LANDSAT digital image 
                         processing which were correlated with radar images and aerial 
                         pkotographs. A statistical classification using algorithms from 
                         the Multispectral Interative Image Analysis System (IMAGE-100) 
                         yielded a thematic map, from which 13 units were selected for area 
                         estimation. Correlations with radar image and panchromatic aerial 
                         photograph area estimation revealed maximum linear correlation 
                         coefficients higher than r=0.99, which means that the MSS-LANDSAT 
                         data processing system was entirely satisfactory for 
                         identification of the general characteristics of mangrove 
                         environments.",
